The Coalition are responsible for increases in Pensions

NZ Superannuation is set by a statutory formula under the New Zealand Superannuation and Retirement Income Act 2001: whichever is higher of CPI or wage growth, with a floor ensuring the married-couple rate stays at least 66% of the net average wage.

This formula, not any government's discretionary decision, drives the automatic annual increases, including the April 2026 Annual General Adjustment that lifted the couple rate over $50 to $1,708 a fortnight (up more than $180 since the 2023 election).

National, and its MPs, including Nicola Willis and Christopher Luxon, have credited these rises to their own policies (e.g. the Back Pocket Boost tax relief plan), but no party or politician is responsible for the underlying, legislated increase itself.
