On 27 July 2026, Prime Minister Christopher Luxon formally ruled out National working with the Opportunity Party, saying that "in a very cursory glance, it looks like they just want to increase taxes", citing OP's land tax, capital gains tax, and universal basic income policies as incompatible with National's approach. Separately, NZ First leader Winston Peters has ruled out working with the Labour Party, saying "No one gets to lie to me twice. We are not going to go with the Labour Party, this present Labour Party crowd, because they can't be trusted," citing Labour's handling of the He Puapua report and Three Waters reforms during their prior coalition.
