The India Free Trade Agreement will create a special visa that allows Indians to bring in their families

NZ First leader Winston Peters argued the FTA's 5,000 Temporary Employment Entry visas could bring "as many as 20,000 Indian nationals" into the country at once, since each principal visa holder could "bring their spouse and children". Trade Minister Todd McClay called this claim misinformation.

According to both McClay and Immigration Minister Erica Stanford, the FTA itself does not include any new partner or family waiver.

Work visa holders of a year or more already have family-reunification rights under existing immigration law, which is not a right created by this agreement, and the finalised FTA establishes structured pathways for skilled professionals, business support and students without an exclusive family category.
