Labour oversaw a 30 per cent increase in violent crime, a 75 per cent increase in gang membership, and a 500 per cent increase in ram raids.

Mark Mitchell claimed that "under Chris Hipkins' and Ginny Andersen's watch, Police were saddled with a 30 per cent increase in violent crime, a 75 per cent increase in gang membership, and a 500 per cent increase in ram raids". This could be "true" if you try really hard to ignore the cherry picked data.

Violent crime stats are tracked in multiple ways (reported crime, victimisations, incident reports); the data National cites also shows a larger increase in violent crime under National's own tenure, even as fewer victimisation reports let them claim crime is falling. According to Police data, Gang membership has grown faster under National, and become harder to track since patch bans were introduced. Ram raids were only officially tracked as a distinct crime category from 2020, so no comparable pre-2020 data exists; between October 2022 and October 2023 (before National took office) ram raids had already fallen 83% from the year before thanks to the Small Retail Crime Prevention Fund put in place by Labour.
