The Wāhine statue is one of a pair of artworks (with Horotiu) unveiled as part of the City Rail Link's Te Waihorotiu Station launch.

Together costing $1.38 million, the Council put $744,000 towards Wāhine and $632,000 towards Horotiu. The Auckland City Centre Targeted Rate, a fund earmarked for improving Central City vibrancy and public space, covered 65% of Wāhine's cost and 72.2% of Horotiu's. The remaining roughly $400,000 came from general rates set aside for public art funding.
